Every Karastan design has a number, and that number is the quickest way to identify a rug. Collectors and dealers often refer to Karastans by number alone: a "717," a "762," a "785." This entry explains how the numbers work and lists the Karastan designs most often seen.
How the numbers work
A full Karastan pattern number has two parts: the collection and the design. On labels and in catalogs they are written with a slash or a hyphen.
- 700/717: collection 700 (the Original Collection), design 717, the Multicolor Panel Kirman.
- 509/1733: collection 509 (Garden of Eden), design 1733, Green Savonnerie.
- 2200-202: collection 2200 (Antique Legends), design 202, Bakhtiyari.
- 900-906: collection 900 (Samovar Teawash), design 906, Feraghan Sarouk.
In the Original Collection the design numbers are themselves in the 700s, so the collection number is often dropped and the rug is simply called "Karastan #717." In other collections the full number is usually needed. See The Karastan Original Collection.
