Karastans were woven in a set range of sizes, and those sizes are a little different from the ones most rug sellers use today. A Karastan described as "9x12" is usually 8' 8" x 12', and a "6x9" is usually 5' 9" x 9'. Knowing the true sizes helps when you plan a room, and knowing which sizes were made in small numbers helps you recognize a rare find.
| Room size | 8' 8" x 12' and 8' 8" x 10' 6" |
|---|---|
| Large room | 10' x 14' |
| Medium | 5' 9" x 9' |
| Small | 4' 3" x 6' (often called 4x6) |
| Scatter | About 3' x 5', 2' 6" x 4' and 2' x 4' |
| Runners | 2' 6" wide, in lengths such as 8' 6" and 12' |
How Karastan sizes compare
Today's standard rug sizes are round numbers: 6' x 9', 8' x 10', 9' x 12'. Karastan's sizes were slightly smaller in width, so a Karastan "9x12" at 8' 8" x 12' covers a little less floor than a modern 9' x 12'. When planning a room, measure with the true size. Listings and labels often round the size, so check the actual measurements before you buy. See Rug Sizes Explained and Choosing the Right Rug Size.
Rare sizes
Not every design was woven in every size, and some sizes were made in far smaller numbers than others. Among vintage Karastans, these are generally the hardest to find:
- 10' x 14' and other large room sizes, especially in the classic Kirman and Sarouk designs.
- Runners, particularly long runners and wide runners such as 4' x 10'.
- Very small rugs, such as 2' x 4', which were often used hard at doorways and have rarely survived in good condition.
- Round and unusual shapes, which were produced in some later collections.
Runners
Karastan runners are usually 2' 6" wide, with some 3' wide, in lengths from about 8' 6" to 12'. Because hallways and stairs see heavy traffic, many runners were worn out long ago, and good examples in classic designs are scarce. A runner in a well-known pattern such as the #717 Multicolor Panel Kirman or the #785 Red Sarouk is especially sought after.
Matching sets
Because each Karastan design was woven in several sizes, it is possible to find matching rugs: a room-size rug for a living room, a runner for the hall and a small rug for the entry, all in the same pattern. Assembling a matched set from vintage rugs takes patience, but it gives a house a pleasing sense of unity.
